You can achieve level 20 in Dragon Age: Origins before completing the Joining ritual (or even leaving Ostagar!) When Duncan sends you into the wilds for darkspawn blood and treaties, only come back with the blood. Then talk to Duncan repeatedly for extra xp (set your difficulty level to Nightmare for even more xp!)
